Mark’s Top 3 Reason’s to make Cinnamon Flax Applesauce every night for dessert:
1. A top source for fiber
Flaxseeds are a great source of antioxidants, high in Omega-3 anti-inflammatory-promoting healthy fats, and full of healthy fiber. Each serving contains a whopping 3 tablespoons of freshly ground flaxseeds! Your body is gonna love you after eating this… and you’ll FEEL it! Apples are also high in fiber, called pectin fiber, which helps pull out mercury from the body and kick it out once and for all. This recipe is especially good when used in conjunction with a heavy metal detox under the guidance and supervision of a Naturopath or Holistic Nutritionist.
2. Lowers cholesterol levels and promotes healthy arteries
This helps to support and maintain a healthy metabolism, clean and tone the digestive system (flaxseeds mucilaginous properties are often well tolerated by those with IBS, IBD and diverticulitis), and helps bind and excrete once and for all excess cholesterol and fats from the blood stream and colon.
Apple Pectin and Mucilaginous Flax Fiber
Both pectin fiber and the high fiber from flaxseeds help in bringing down cholesterol levels. The body is a genius when it comes to getting rid of what it doesn’t need. Excess cholesterol is often waiting to be pulled out by fiber from a healthy diet, such as from vegetables, fruits, legumes, nuts and seeds.
This recipe is great for picking up the excess cholesterol that the blood stream is trying to get rid of by dumping it in the digestive tract. Without sufficient fiber, our bodies will often reabsorb the cholesterol. Not good.
Let’s keep daily fiber intake at a minimum of 25 grams and shooting for, as Brenda Watson ND advocates, 35 grams per day.
3. Promotes healthy estrogen levels! Sexy hormone balance = sexy bods!
The lignins in flaxseeds also helps maintain healthy estrogen levels, by helping to reduce excess estrogen in the body in both men and women. Women, you’re not the only ones that might be dealing with excess estrogen in the body. Men can easily run into this problem too when there is not sufficient fiber in the diet to help bind to and pull out excess estrogen from the body.
This recipe also helps to eliminate mercury, a toxic heavy metal that can get trapped in the body from eating high amounts of certain fish and seafood, therefore promoting healthy thyroid. A healthy thyroid helps maintain optimal energy levels in the body and keep our metabolism running strong and healthy. A slow thyroid can increase weight-gain. Love your thyroid and find ways to support a healthy thyroid. This recipe is a step in the right direction. Enjoy and consume often!
As a holistic nutritionist and personal trainer, I notice that many of the clients I see do not get enough fiber in their diet (or Omega-3 fatty acids!). I like to tell my clients to make this recipe after dinner for dessert. It helps to curb the evening ‘sweet-tooth’ cravings and the high fiber content keeps you full. An added bonus is the next morning you will have a great bowel movement. If you don’t, you’ll want to find a Holistic Nutritionist to work with to address any underlying digestive problems.
Cinnamon Flax Applesauce
Ingredients:
1 medium sized organic apple, chopped (I like to use the entire apple, including the core, but if you wish you can remove the core. I prefer gala or red delicious apples, but you can use any type!)
1 tsp cinnamon
3 tbsp fresh ground flaxseeds (flaxseeds should always be stored in a cold place, preferably the refrigerator or freezer to preserve healthy oils)
1/2 cup purified water
Instructions:
- Blend all ingredients in Magic Bullet or blender.
- Enjoy immediately. Note that the longer you wait before eating it, the thicker it will become as the ground flaxseeds will expand.
And there you go! Now you have a fat-burning diabetic-friendly dessert. Enjoy and consume often!
