CAFFEINE BLUES by Stephen Cherniske, M.S.

Review Written by: Briana Southward, Founder of The Naked Label

If you consume caffeine this is the book for you. People often ask me about the health risks of drinking their favourite caffeinated beverage. The truth is that there is a short answer and a long answer to this question. The short answer is, “don’t drink it, it’s bad for your health”. The long answer is full of explanations, a discussion about the history of caffeine, the “real” effects it has on your body, etc. If you drink caffeine or know someone who does, I strongly encourage you to read this book. It provides a great overview and is very much in line with my holistic beliefs.

If you want one small snapshot into some of the things it will discuss, I can provide you with a little teaser. When I ask my clients about the main reason they drink caffeine, the number one response is energy. Therefore, one of the most interesting points about caffeine (which Stephen Cherniske discusses in this book) is that caffeine actually doesn’t give us energy at all!! In fact, it gives us stress which makes us feel more alert and it also gives us all the health problems that go along with stress! Yikes.

CRAZY SEXY DIET by Kris Carr

Review Written by: Briana Southward, Founder of The Naked Label

Way to go Kris! Thanks for writing an absolutely wonderful book. I fell in love with this book while reading it in Costa Rica this year. If you enjoy my blog, you will enjoy this book. Kris uses a similar ‘tell it like it is’ approach to getting her message across. Kris provides an excellent overview in layman terms of the human body and the world of holistic health. She even provides instructions for a 21-day cleanse.

If you are thinking about buying this book but are still perched up on the fence, I encourage you to visit my friend Laura-Beth Gray’s blog called Shine Up That Gray! After I recommended this book to her and her boyfriend Blair, they ran out to get it, read it, and jumped right in on Kris’s words of wisdom. Laura Beth recounts her hilarious experiences and her delicious healthy knowledge on her blog.

THE OMNIVORE’S DILEMMA by Michael Pollan

Review Written by: Briana Southward, Founder of The Naked Label

Michael Pollan is one of the most well know food authors out there. He was a journalist who set out to determine where the food on his plate came from. Over the years, I have read a lot about the intricate workings of the food industry. However, Michael Pollan is able to put it all together in a concise, informative, and interesting way. He provides you with a lot of information but is able to give you the information in an entertaining way through his words. For me, I was hooked and had a hard time putting the book down until I had finished every last word. If you have ever wondered where your food comes from, I encourage you to dive right in to this fabulous book.

THERE IS A CURE FOR DIABETES by Gabriel Cousens, MD

Review Written by: Briana Southward, Founder of The Naked Label

There is a Cure for Diabetes is written by Dr. Gabriel Cousins, an M.D. that runs the Tree of Life Rejuvenation Centre in Arizona. He focuses his efforts on helping people reverse diabetes. Although this book goes into a lot of technical information, it provides a fantastic overview of what is possible for people who are dealing with diabetes. It clearly outlines that in many cases, reversing type 2 diabetes is possible. It also talks about type 1 diabetes and how in some cases it can be reversed. If you have diabetes at the present time and are interested in learning about what can be done holistically to reverse the illness, this is a fantastic book to read. If you aren’t sure you can get through a book on the subject and would rather watch a documentary, I encourage you to check out Simply Raw: Reversing Diabetes in 30 Days. It follows 7 individuals with diabetes as they work with Dr. Gabriel Cousens at the Tree of Life to reverse their diabetes and get off all of their medication in 30 days.
