Behind the scenes
Since opening in 1980, the team at Sweet Cherubim has grown to more than 20 pairs of hands behind the counter preparing food in this family-run business. With a revolving front door of regulars and newcomers alike, it’s a wonder the hinges don’t wear, as customers grace this local hot-spot all day long! Brig Chopra, manager of this cozy cafe gave us a glimpse into the growth of his booming business as they now serve up more than 300 samosas daily!
Next to its delicious food, the best thing about Sweet Cherubim is its organic grocery counterpart right next door. The shelves are stocked with everything from soaps to spirulina, coconut oil to quinoa. From personal care products to supplements, grocery items and everything in between, Sweet Cherubim’s friendly atmosphere and pocket-friendly prices will make you feel great about supporting local business.
Getting into the Good Stuff…Time to Eat!
I visited Sweet Cherubim with my fellow nutritionista-to-be, Jacinthe, and our dairy-free, gluten-free dietary restrictions were by no means concerns here. This vegan-eatery makes it simple for anyone to eat out without the headache that can accompany those with special diets. Everything on the menu is clearly marked so you can rest easy knowing the choice you made eating out would be the same you make in the comfort of your own home!
Time for Tea
We started our late afternoon lunch off with a silky smooth Indian Chai Tea made with almond milk and a freshly squeezed orange, apple and carrot juice. Sipping these elixirs got our tummies rumbling for more as we were entertained by the eclectic hustle and bustle of ‘the Drive’ out our sunny window seat.
Mmmmm Vegan Spreads…
Our sights were soon set on the vegan-spreads that were making their way to our table as the inviting smells of cumin, coriander and curry wafted through the airy restaurant. At Sweet Cherubim, many of the dishes are prepared ahead of time making it a great place to grab a quick bite at lunch if you’re short on time without sacrificing quality.
Daily Soup Special! We Love Kale!
Next to tackle was the daily soup special. It includes a choice of rice, chapati or bread, choice of soup served with a green salad and choice of homemade dressing. True to nutritionist form, we chose the kale soup that was bursting with flavour as it danced on our tongues and into our bellies. This meal sits around the $9 mark and is perfect for a light midday meal that will keep you going all day long without weighing you down.
Indian Thali to Satisfy
For those with more of a voracious appetite, the Indian Thali is easily the best bang for your buck. For under $12, this is the perfect pairing for the person who wants to try a little bit of everything, and trust me, at Sweet Cherubim with choices aplenty, decisions don’t come easy!
Tangy Sunshine Dressing is a Fav!
Our thali included curried chickpea balls, a potato and green pea subji, brown rice, green salad with the signature ‘sunshine’ dressing and a poppadum placed right in the center to round out this veggie-lovers delight! Simultaneous nods of approval bounced across the table as soon as we tasted the mouthwatering chickpea balls with hints of turmeric and chili bursting through these bite-sized beauties. The tangy sunshine dressing is a favourite among regulars and with good reason as it instantly jazzed up the simple greens.
With full-bellies and happy hearts we walked out of Sweet Cherubim completely satiated and prepped to tackle the afternoon with energy abounding. The only question left unanswered as we walked out the door, “when are we coming back next?”
