You know you are a foodie when every time you travel you find yourself scouring over Trip Advisor and other review blogs to find great healthy restaurants to eat at. When I’m in the comfort of my own home, surrounded by the food I love it’s easy to eat healthy. When I’m travelling it often takes a bit more effort to find the hidden gems that serve up healthy fare. I was travelling to Barbados this year for a friend’s wedding and had read a lot of incredible reviews about a restaurant called The Good Life. Luckily it was just around the corner from the hotel we were staying at and I was excited to give it a try.
From the moment I stepped into The Good Life, I was hooked. The restaurant itself is located behind a busy plaza but when you walk in you are comforted by the open air environment, the rustic island feel (it reminded me of being in a tiki bar), great music playing, and friendly staff. We met the manager DJ. His laid back and friendly demeanour was very welcoming and we looked forward to running into him each time we visited (which was a lot during our week vacation!)
Let’s Undress The Menu
The Good Life serves healthy vegan food. I knew I had come to the right place when I saw things like spirulina, flax seeds, and buckwheat on the menu. They have a large menu of shakes and smoothies that are loaded with superfoods, fresh fruit, almond milk, etc. The cost is about $5 US which is super cheap considering the size of them and the ‘goodness’ they are made with.
They also have a number of salads, noodle dishes, rice bowls, wraps, and of course their famous freshly pressed juices (declared famous by me!).
We had the opportunity to try many different dishes on the menu. They are all DELICIOUS so you really can’t go wrong.
The first day I had the Green Goddess Shake which had sunflower seeds, pumpkin seeds, almond milk, protein powder, and spirulina. It was absolutely delicious!! My husband and I shared one of the rice bowls and it was also very good (the dressing was especially delicious).
After eating there the first day, we loved it so much we decided to bring my whole family back the next day. The favourite items were the South By South West Wrap (which I then ate ever day thereafter) and the Soba Noodles dish which was so good my husband and I actually ordered one to go on our last day and ate it on the plane. Everyone around us was clearly jealous as they ate their horribly stale plane food. hehe.
If you are visiting Barbados, I would definitely recommend this restaurant and was sad when I had to say goodbye to it and head home. It’s not often that I find a gem like this when I’m travelling.
