miso soup with ginger and kale Do you find that you’re having a hard time living the lifestyle you once did? Is a night of partying leaving you with a ridiculous hangover that seems to last for days? Well, the good news is that horrible hangovers aren’t necessarily related to age. The bad news is that it’s a telltale sign of how slow your body is eliminating toxins. Think about all of the horrible things you’ve put your body through over the years… the beer funnels, the bottles of wine, tequila shots, and of course, the chip truck after the bar? I bet some of you can’t believe you’re still here with us today after going down memory lane! Before we go further, give yourself a gigantic hug and tell your body you’re sorry.

All these toxins over the years have slowed down the detoxification process within the body, and an organ such as the liver is now having a hard time catching up. The accumulation of toxins within the body has made it extremely difficult and challenging to process and eliminate alcohol, like it once did. The moral of this story is this: The more toxic you are the more intense your hangover will feel.

We aren’t 16 anymore, as we get older, it’s time to protect the liver and be kind to it, as its one of the most important organs in our body. Our livers perform over 600 functions. Almost every challenging health condition in the body usually starts with an unhealthy liver. This is one organ you need to give big love to on a daily basis.

Did you know that your liver is responsible for detoxifying virtually everything you consume, everything that you smell and everything that you put on your skin? Making environmental pollutants, perfumes, chemical cleaners, body products etc., your livers worst nightmare. Never before in human history have we faced such an internal environmental catastrophe.

Below is a miso soup recipe that is also a liver detoxifying potion and a hangover remedy. You may even start feeling better just from the aroma steaming from this bowl of deliciousness. Unpasteurized miso contains a ton of active enzymes making it excellent for stimulating digestion and helping to alkalize your blood after a night of drinking. Miso also contains choline, which helps the liver speed up the release of alcohol from the body, helping to relieve or reduce a hangover. Kale is also a powerful ingredient in this soup, as it contains sulfur-rich phytonutrients that trigger a detoxifying dance deep inside your cells.

Superhero Miso Soup wtih Ginger and Kale

Ingredients:

8 1/4 cups of filtered water
1 medium, carrot, cut in half and sliced
1 medium leek, cut in half and sliced
6 kale leaves, cut into bite sized pieces
4 inch piece of fresh ginger, grated
3 to 5 tbsp dark organic unpasteurized miso (taste as you go, as you don’t want it too salty)
4 scallions, finely sliced
Garnished with sunflower sprouts (optional)
Red pepper flakes (optional)

Instructions:

  1. In a large soup pot, heat a 1/4 cup of water and saute carrot and leek for 5 minutes.
  2. Combine the remaining water and place over high heat. Bring to a boil for 15-20 minutes or until veggies are tender.
  3. Stir in kale and simmer for another 2 minutes.
  4. Squeeze the grated ginger in your hand over your soup to extract the juice – discarding the pulp or save for a later recipe. (Once you give your soup a final tasting you may like to add some of the pulp back in – so don’t compost it just yet – its up to you.)
  5. Remove a cup of the broth from the soup pot into a small bowl and add the miso. Stir until dissolved. Pour this mixture back into the soup and stir. Taste, and then add more (the same way) a bit at a time, until you reach your desired taste, as miso can be salty.
  6. Once the soup has returned to a simmer – remove from heat.
  7. Taste and add more miso to get your desired flavour.
  8. Chop scallions and sunflower spouts, garnish and serve!

Note: To receive the full health benefits of the unpasteurized miso make sure not to heat it too high, since high temperatures will kill the friendly bacteria. Hence, why we add the miso into the soup at the end of the process.
