I love Kale Eatery! I was really looking forward to reviewing this restaurant. In the process of sitting down with one of the owners, I learned so much about them and got to try some of their incredible food. I was excited to hear that they were Toronto’s first all vegan, organic, macrobiotic eatery! Here’s the history: Kale Eatery is a family owned and operated restaurant which grew its roots under the name Sunny Cafe at Noah’s Natural Health Food store back in 1993. In 2009 they decided to expand and opened Kale Eatery on Yonge Street in midtown Toronto.
Meet the Fabulous Chefs
Ursula, Edyta & Henry Lorek are a dynamic team that have been creating delicious dishes for decades. They have elevated food service to an art as they lovingly prepare each delicious dish fresh each morning, depending on their delivery that day. From their signature spelt sweet potato and quinoa perogies to their spelt banana walnut chocolate chip muffins, there is no limit to their creativity!
Kale Eatery Undressed
At Kale they believe that vibrant health is of utmost importance and they help their customers achieve that by providing fresh, well priced, organic offerings prepared daily. These are made with local and organic produce sourced directly from Pfenning’s Organic Farm. Kale offers a unique opportunity to make healthy decisions quickly by offering a self-serve menu (sold by weight). Their selection of gluten-free, plant based, vegan options are sure to please every taste palate! From their hot table full of fresh organic stews and pies to their vast selection of nourishing salads, they offer an abundance of choices for diners to refuel in a deliciously wholesome way.
Who’s Hungry?
My fellow holistic nutritionist friend, Kalini and I were greeted by Edyta, the joyful part owner and front of the house manager at Kale. She served us Kale’s signature juice of fresh apple, lemon and kale; with a promise to revitalize mind, body and soul. It was refreshing and delicious, packed with vitamins, minerals and loaded with detoxifying phytonutrients. Being a vegan herself, Edyta has come to understand the importance of whole foods and proper food combining to ensure her vegan guests have everything they need to refuel properly and deliciously at Kale. Have a look at their rotating menu here!
We stepped up to the buffet and were pleasantly surprised to notice that Kale provides ingredient lists for all of their foods, as they insist on being transparent; they have the utmost respect for their client’s needs. It was difficult to decide what to eat as the food looked and smelled so good, but that is precisely the beauty of a self-service table. You may take what you like in any amount!
We were pleasantly surprised at their countless choices of freshly baked goods. Their Banana Walnut Chocolate Chip muffins are the perfect amount of sweet to close any meal. Although not gluten free, they are made with spelt, which can be tolerated much better than modern day wheat. Their black currant almond bar is loaded with rich dark fruit and lots of antioxidants; the perfect accompaniment to a cup of their organic loose leaf tea.
The owners of Kale are a family of integrity, are completely environmentally friendly, and are chemical free. They use the highest quality natural products that are good for you and momma earth. Also, if you enjoy a glass of wine with your meal, they have a good selection of organic wine and beer on hand. If you’re one to think of the next day’s meal, they have well priced, freshly made wraps, soups and salads to go if you’re on the fly!
Also, you can pre-order & take out Kale’s signature spelt perogies (in the restaurant or online) in three mouth watering flavours: Squash with millet, sweet potato with quinoa, or potato and tofu.
I had a lovely experience at Kale, and enjoyed speaking with Edyta, Ursula & Henry Lorek who all share a passion for love and life through their service of deliciously wholesome and nourishing food. In my opinion, Kale looks incredible naked!
